How to Care for Your Bespoke Suit

May 26, 2026 Admin 8 min read
Investing in a bespoke suit is a significant decision. Proper care will ensure your suit lasts for many years and continues to look its best.

Here are essential tips to maintain your suit's beauty and longevity.

First, always hang your suit properly.

Use a wide wooden hanger that supports the shape of the shoulders. The hanger should extend to the ends of the shoulders to prevent sagging.

Wire hangers will stretch and distort the fabric over time. Plastic hangers are not strong enough for the weight of a quality suit.

Second, give your suit a rest between wears.

Wool needs time to breathe and return to its natural shape. Avoid wearing the same suit two days in a row.

Hang your suit in a well-ventilated area after wearing it. This allows moisture from your body to evaporate.

Rotating between two or three suits will extend the life of each one significantly.

Third, dry clean sparingly.

Excessive dry cleaning can break down the fibers and shorten the life of your suit. The chemicals used in dry cleaning are harsh on natural fabrics.

Only dry clean when necessary, such as when there are visible stains or unpleasant odors.

Between cleanings, spot clean small stains with a damp cloth. Use a fabric freshener spray for odors.

Fourth, brush your suit regularly.

Use a soft clothes brush to remove dust, lint, and surface dirt. Brush in the direction of the fabric weave.

Regular brushing prevents dirt from embedding in the fibers. It also keeps the fabric looking fresh and new.

Fifth, address minor repairs immediately.

A loose button or small tear will only get worse if ignored. A missing button can be replaced quickly. A small tear can be repaired before it becomes a large rip.

Check your suit regularly for loose threads, missing buttons, and small holes.

Additional tips for suit care:

Always empty your pockets before hanging your suit. Items in pockets can stretch the fabric and distort the shape.

Steam your suit rather than ironing it directly. Steam removes wrinkles without damaging the fabric.

Store your suit in a breathable garment bag. Avoid plastic bags which trap moisture and can lead to mildew.

Protect your suit from moths. Cedar blocks or lavender sachets are natural deterrents.
